Fence Company on Hilton Head Island, SC

Hilton Head Island is one of the most beautiful and distinctive communities on the East Coast — and one of the most regulated. The island’s famously understated aesthetic, where signs are muted and buildings blend into tree canopies, extends to fencing. Architectural Review Boards (ARBs) in Hilton Head’s plantation communities control what gets built, and fence projects require careful attention to design standards, materials, and placement.

Savannah Gate and Fence brings the experience to navigate these requirements. We’ve worked with Hilton Head homeowners to install fences that meet their community’s architectural standards while achieving their goals — whether that’s pool safety, pet containment, privacy, or simply defining their property lines.

Hilton Head Plantation Communities We Serve

  • Sea Pines Plantation — Hilton Head’s original planned community and one of the largest on the island. Sea Pines has specific architectural standards; natural materials and natural colors are preferred. We help homeowners work with the Sea Pines Community Services to get fence projects approved.
  • Palmetto Dunes — A premier resort community with golf courses and lagoon views. Pool fencing and decorative aluminum fences are common requests from both full-time residents and vacation rental property owners.
  • Shipyard Plantation — Another major plantation on the south end of the island, with its own ARB requirements. We’re familiar with Shipyard’s standards for fence height, material, and color.
  • Port Royal Plantation — The oceanfront community on the north tip of the island with strict design standards reflecting the plantation character.
  • Hilton Head Plantation — A large planned community on the north end, home to thousands of residences. Many Hilton Head Plantation homeowners need pool fencing or backyard privacy fences.
  • Indigo Run — An upscale golf community with architectural oversight. Ornamental aluminum fencing is commonly approved here.
  • Wexford Plantation — A gated community with boating access and high design standards.
  • Non-plantation areas — Some parts of Hilton Head, particularly along US-278 and William Hilton Parkway, fall outside the plantation system and have more flexibility on fence design.

Fence Considerations on Hilton Head

Architectural Review Boards

Most of Hilton Head’s plantation communities have an ARB that must approve any fence installation. Typical requirements include: natural or earth-tone colors, no bright whites in some communities, height limits (usually 4 feet visible from street, 6 feet maximum in rear), and material restrictions (often no chain link in residential areas). We strongly recommend submitting for ARB approval before purchasing materials — we can help you understand what your community typically approves and how to frame your application.

Salt Air and Coastal Environment

Hilton Head is an island, and the salt air affects everything. For any property on or near the beach, lagoon, or marsh, vinyl and powder-coated aluminum are the only materials we recommend. Wood fences near salt water require intensive maintenance and will typically show significant deterioration within 5-7 years without it. For properties farther inland on the island, wood is viable with proper treatment, but vinyl remains the low-maintenance choice.

Pool Fencing Demand

With hundreds of vacation rental properties and a culture centered around outdoor living, pool fencing is one of our most common requests on Hilton Head. South Carolina requires pool fencing that’s at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. We install compliant pool fencing that also meets each community’s ARB standards — typically aluminum in black or bronze finishes.
