Wood is less expensive to install but harder to maintain

Wood vs Vinyl Fencing: Which is Better?

Back in the day, wood fences were everything. But because of the increasing cost of maintaining wooden fences, they are slowly now being replaced by vinyl fences.

Here are the main differences between wood vs vinyl fencing to keep in mind before deciding which one is right for you.

Wood Fence

There are many reasons to opt for a wood fence. The most important of these reasons is that a wood fence tends to look the most organic.

Wood fences are the old school, stereotypical American picket fence. Today, wood fences are available in a range of different colors and styles that you can choose from.

No matter what type of wood you choose from, the care and maintenance of wood is always a problem. Wood is extremely susceptible to weather conditions such as rain, wind, and harsh sunlight.

So if you do decide to go forward with installing a wood fence, bear in mind that you will have to necessarily pay for cleaning, treating, staining, and re-staining of the wood as the color loses its charm.

Typically, wood fences may have to be replaced entirely every 15-20 years on average.

Vinyl Fence

Despite the popularity of wood fences all this while, vinyl fences are slowly taking over because of their modern-day advantages over wood.

The main advantage that vinyl holds over food is that it is a lot more durable, as compared to wood. The first form of this durable vinyl material was called PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

The first few versions of PVC that were introduced weren’t too impressive and appeared artificial and of poor quality.

As such, people wouldn’t even consider something other than wood for their fences.

Nowadays, the quality and variety of vinyl available is tough, organic-looking, and the perfect replacement for wood if you are unwilling to deal with the care and maintenance that a wood fence most certainly requires.

While the cost of installing a vinyl fence is much greater than that of installing a wooden fence, it’s all worth it in the end because vinyl does not require nearly as much upkeep.

A vinyl fence will most certainly be superior to wood when it comes to resisting unfavorable weather conditions. Vinyl also will not fade or warp, as wood tends to do with time. A bit of regular cleaning is all you’ll need to keep your vinyl fence looking brand new!

These were some of the main differences between wood vs vinyl fencing to keep in mind before making your decision.
